Our History
East Central Minnesota Habitat for Humanity was incorporated as an Affiliate of Habitat International in 1994. We are Habitat for Humanity International’s affiliate for the Minnesota counties of Pine, Isanti, Chisago, Kanabec, and Mille Lacs.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit worldwide ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating poverty housing. HFHI was established in 1976 in Americus, Georgia. By September of 2005, HFHI had built the 200,000th house.
Our affiliate has constructed 23 homes. Two of the homes were built to be completely handicap accessible for partnering family members with severe disabilities. Thus far, we have built one home each year from 1995 through 1998. In 1999 and 2000, we built two homes each year. In 2002, we completed three homes within our Affiliate service area. 2003 through 2005 saw the completion of two homes each year. 2006 brought the completion of four additional homes the two more in 2007 bringing the total to 23.
In 2008 we will be building 2 homes. Habitat homes are sold to those in need at no profit, through no-interest loans.
We operate through our Volunteer Board of Directors, Volunteer Committees, and Executive Director. The committees are: Family Selection, Site Selection, Building, Family Support, Church Relations, Fund Raising/Public Relations and Volunteer Recruitment.
